What are the Different Types of Measuring Cups?
- Liquid
- Dry
Liquid: Liquid measuring cups are used to specifically measure liquid ingredients. This kind of measuring cup usually has a handle and a spout to easily pour the liquid. They are designed this way so you can measure how much you need without spilling the liquid. Liquid measuring cups are typically made of glass so you can see how much liquid is in the container. Clearly marked lines indicate the different measurements on the outside of a liquid measuring cup. The average liquid measuring cup can hold up to 2 cups of liquid. Most liquid measuring cups also display lines for fluid ounces, liters, and milliliters. Use a liquid measuring cup to measure ingredients like honey, milk, or oil.
Dry: Dry measuring cups are used to specifically measure dry ingredients only. Dry measuring cups have longer handles to easily reach into larger containers of dry ingredients. This type of measuring cup is usually made from plastic or metal. Fill dry measuring cups to the top unless otherwise instructed. Dry measuring cups come in sets and usually come in ¼ cup, ⅓ cup, ½ cup, and 1 cup measures. Look for the measurement on the handle or bottom of the measuring cup.
