What is White Chocolate?

White chocolate is a confectionery originating from Switzerland.  White chocolate is ivory in color, solid, and usually comes in thin rectangular bars.  Even though it is called chocolate, it isn’t.  It is made out of cocoa butter, milk solids, and sugar and it does not contain cocoa solids like milk or dark chocolate.  White chocolate is firm, but can easily break, and melts into a smooth liquid.

White chocolate is sweet with a silky taste.  It is not bitter and does not have a strong chocolate taste.

How Do You Eat White Chocolate?

White chocolate is eaten in both solid and liquid forms and is typically used in similar ways to milk or dark chocolate in sweet dishes.  Brownies, cakes, and cookies use white chocolate in the form of chips, liquid drizzles, curls and shavings, and chunks.  White chocolate is used in mousse, hot chocolate, and truffles recipes.  White chocolate may be used as a garnish in shavings, curls, ground, or chunks over desserts.

Where Can You Buy White Chocolate?

White chocolate is found in the candy or confectionery aisle of the grocery store.  Specific brands or types of white chocolate are found in chocolate shops.

How Do You Store White Chocolate?

Store white chocolate in a cool, dry place to prevent melting.  It needs to be sealed in its original wrapper or placed in a container.  White chocolate may also be stored in the refrigerator in a sealed container.

White chocolate has to meet certain conditions to be classified as white chocolate.  In the United States, that means that there cannot be more than 55% sugar or sweeteners and it must be at least 20% cocoa butter.

Recipes Using White Chocolate

White Hot Chocolate

Make homemade hot chocolate with a twist. Bring milk, white chocolate, and vanilla to a simmer in a saucepan. Once the mixture simmers, remove from heat and pour into mugs. Serve with a cinnamon stick and whipped cream.

White Chocolate Chip Cookies

Create a delicious new cookie with a few changes to your regular chocolate chip cookie recipe. Prepare the cookie dough as directed, but add in chopped cashews, cinnamon, and swap the chocolate chips for white chocolate chips. Bake as directed for a tasty treat.

Melted White Chocolate

Melted white chocolate completes many dessert recipes. Microwave white chocolate in 30 intervals and stir until the chocolate is smooth. Drizzle white chocolate over cakes or use it to dip cherries or strawberries in.

Caramel Corn

Enjoy white chocolate chips mixed into caramel popcorn. Make unsalted popcorn and cool. Pour caramel sauce over the top and toss until the caramel evenly coats the popcorn. Fold in white chocolate chips and caramel chips.

White Chocolate Truffles

Making homemade truffles is an easy process. Microwave heavy cream, butter, and white chocolate in the microwave at 30 seconds intervals until chocolate melts. Refrigerate mixture to set. Next, scoop out white chocolate and roll into a ball. Roll truffles in cinnamon sugar, coconut, or freshly grated chocolate.
