What is Savoy Cabbage?

Savoy cabbage, also called curly cabbage, is a leafy vegetable from the cabbage family.  The cabbage forms a moderately tight ball of leaves around a head.  Savoy cabbage has wrinkly dark green outer leaves that transition to light yellow as they get closer to the thick stem in the center.  The leaves feel firm when raw and maintain their texture when cooked.  Quality savoy cabbages feel heavy with firm, healthy leaves.

How Do You Eat Savoy Cabbage?

Eat savoy cabbage raw or cooked and use it in place of other cabbages.  Make sure to thoroughly wash the cabbage before using it.  Use raw savoy cabbage in salads, as a wrap, or in coleslaw.  To avoid overcooking savoy cabbage, try blanching, steaming, stir-frying, or boiling it.  Cook savoy cabbage into soups, stews, or as the base of a side dish such as potatoes.  Foods frequently paired with savoy cabbage include bacon, garlic, and butter.

Where Can You Buy Savoy Cabbage?

Look for savoy cabbage in the chilled area of the produce section of the grocery store.  Your grocery store may also carry shredded savoy cabbage, found in bags or plastic containers near the other salad mixes.

How Do You Store Savoy Cabbage?

Do not wash or remove the outer leaves of a savoy cabbage before storing it.  Place a whole savoy cabbage in a sealed plastic bag and place it in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator.  Use within 5 to 7 days.

Upgrade store-bought alfredo sauce with other ingredients. Prepare penne pasta according to package directions. Heat alfredo sauce in a saucepan. Stir in chopped savoy cabbage, chopped cremini mushrooms, and green onions. Top drained pasta with the sauce and serve with grated parmesan cheese.

Easy Sandwich Wraps

Use savoy cabbage leaves as a wrap for a sandwich. Place a savoy cabbage leaf flat. Layer avocado, seasoned chicken, feta, cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers on the leaf. Roll the savoy cabbage leaf wrap, tucking in the ends to secure them.

Easy Blanched Savoy Cabbage

Quickly cook savoy cabbage leaves without overcooking them. Start by boiling water in a stock pot with salt. Add a layer of savoy cabbage leaves to the water and allow to boil for 2 to 3 minutes. Carefully remove the leaves and immediately dunk them into a bowl of ice water. Transfer cooled leaves to a plate lined with a paper towel to dry.

Vegetable Soup

Make a few changes to your traditional vegetable soup to transform it. Use vegetables such as potatoes, white beans, tomatoes, leeks, savoy cabbage, and carrots to create a delicious combination of vegetables. For added heartiness, stir in rice.
