What is Feta?

Feta is a type of sheep’s milk cheese originating from Greece.  Feta may also be made out of a mixture of sheep and goat’s milk.  It is a crumbly white cheese with a moderately soft texture.  Feta is usually found in cubes or blocks and served in a brine liquid.  Feta does not completely melt, but it softens and turns gooey when heated.

What Does Feta Taste Like?

Feta has a distinct tangy flavor.  Feta tastes salty because of its brine.

How Do You Eat Feta?

Feta is usually eaten uncooked, but may also be eaten cooked.  Common ways to enjoy uncooked feta include sprinkled over salads, mixed into dips, and even whipped and topped on sandwiches.  Spinach and feta are often paired together in casseroles, sandwiches, and wraps.  Feta-stuffed foods, like tomatoes or chicken, serve as flavorful additions to a meal.  Baking is a popular method of cooking feta, usually served topped with herbs, or with roasted tomatoes.  Feta cooks well with pasta and is served in heavy or lighter pasta sauces.

Where Can You Buy Feta?

Look for feta cheese in the refrigerated section with other cheeses in the grocery store.  Some stores place feta in a separate chilled area in the produce section or near the deli counter.  If you can’t find feta, look for alternatives, such as white cheese, in the produce section.

How Do You Store Feta?

Store fresh feta cheese in a sealed container, with its brine liquid, in the refrigerator.  Feta packaged without brine liquid should be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
